Abdellah M. Hassak is a sound artist, DJ/music producer, and art director. He was born in Morocco in 1984. In 2014, his work had already pushed the boundaries of his practice, and he founded Mahattat Radio, where he conducted radiophonic and sound research in interdisciplinary projects with various communities. For 8 years, he participated as an artist, researcher, and radio producer.
Abdellah shapes sound as a material to create sound pieces, performances, acts, and installations. His creative process is often collaborative, involving communities. Currently, his research focuses on memory, which he uses as a creative process based on interaction. He is fascinated by the way humans inhabit their environment.
Listening is at the center of his practice, beyond sound, as a means of grasping the imperceptible or as a pretext for meeting others. His work draws attention to the beings around us. He is interested in the imaginary and the contemporary interpretation that can be made of it, in the dialogue between humans and the context – natural or urban – in which they live, and in what voices tell us beyond words.
Abdellah’s sound pieces have been broadcast on radios around the world, such as Radio Papesse, Hangar, OTO Sound Museum, Pratiques d’hospitalité, and African Crossroads. He has collaborated with many other institutions and cultural spaces in Morocco and abroad in radiophonic and sound practice, such as the 5th edition of the Marrakech Biennale, Le Musée Collectif, 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, Port25 – Raum für Gegenwartskunst, Mannheim FFT Düsseldorf, ÉSAD Grenoble, Sonic Matter, and Qanat Collective.
Abdellah’s approach to artistic creation is guided by extensive research related to the soundscapes and sonic qualities of places and cities, as well as their dimensions of social and cultural transformations. His work takes the form of poetic and interactive performances, as well as installations that include sound objects. This creative approach often uses sound transformation concepts related to soundscapes, resonance, glitches, frequency, noise, and new technologies. These approaches often lead his research to the creation of remixed versions where contemporary communication tools are used for more sharing and interconnecting with each other. Through these different modes of research and production, he creates his own sound narratives that question the immortalization of the moment and memory.
Abdellah is also a co-founder and art director of 4S’, a Moroccan NGO that carries out the FeMENA project, dedicated to the empowerment and professionalization of local music industry actors. He is currently developing a syncretic Afrofuturism music project with a field recording practice as a producer/DJ, under the name Guedra Guedra. His productions are defined by the energy of his tribal bass and by the psychedelic vibe he draws from ancestral rhythms. His latest album, Vexillology, has already been referenced by The Guardian and Bandcamp as « Global Album of the Month! » and his track Archetype was named one of the best tracks of 2021 so far on Mixmag.

Exploring the sounds in the manner of an acoustic architect, the city enables him to develop a contextual approach of sound art.
